Team Rubedo

Lineage

Helio Gracie

Helio Gracie, along with his brother, Carlos, is the pioneer in Gracie Jiu Jitsu. As a young boy, Helio would watch his brothers train judo and jiu jitsu but had to sit out on the training due to his fragility and weakness. One day, a student showed up at the academy to receive a private lesson from his brother, Carlos. However, Carlos was out surfing and was unable to teach the student. Helio was present and offered to teach the student but had to modify some of the techniques due to his condition. Thus, the creation of Gracie Jiu Jitsu had started. Helio developed his style of Jiu Jitsu that was based on leverage and technique, rather than strength and athleticism. Helio went on to further develop the art of Gracie Jiu Jitsu and put it to the test, fighting many younger and stronger opponents during his life. This style of fighting and self-defense eventually influenced the creation of the UFC by Helio’s oldest son, Rorion.

Rickson Gracie

Rickson Gracie is the third son of Helio Gracie and is considered to be the “Greatest Jiu Jitsu Practitioner of All Time.” Rickson has fought professionally in Japan in “Vale Tudo” fights, or “no rules” fighting. He dominated the MMA world for years and currently holds the rank of 9th degree Red Belt, even though he denied the promotion due to not meeting the time requirements set forth by the IBJJF, International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation.

Pedro Sauer

Pedro Sauer is an 8th degree Red/Black belt in the art of Gracie Jiu Jitsu and a former student of both Helio and Rickson Gracie. Pedro came to the United States in the early 90’s with Helio and Rickson and eventually settled in Utah. Here, Pedro started to create the Pedro Sauer Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Association. Since then, Pedro has moved to Virginia and then Savannah, GA where he currently resides. In 2005, Pedro Sauer was voted as the “Best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Instructor in the World” by the notorious Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC). Pedro currently has over 150 affiliate schools in the world and continues to push the art of Gracie Jiu Jitsu to new heights.
